Art fair Foto Tallinn 2019 took place at Kai Art Center from September 27th to 29th, introducing artists, galleries and project spaces based in Estonia, Georgia, The Netherlands, Iceland, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Singapore, Finland and Great Britain. In addition to 35 artists exhibited in the main display, the fair included 3 artists as part of its special projects pop-up programme.
Foto Tallinn, being to date the only contemporary art fair in Estonia, was held for the 9th time. Close to 1,000 people visited the three-day fair, which took place as part of the Tallinn Photomonth contemporary art biennial. More than 200 people participated in the events of the fair’s public programme – roundtables, guided tours, and an artist talk. 17 artworks by both local and international artists were sold at the fair, totalling to more than 17,500 euros.
Partners of Foto Tallinn 2019 were Artproof and Outset Estonia. Artproof sponsored a 5,000-euro production grant for one participating artist to present a new project at the fair. The recipient of the grant is Kristina Õllek who introduced her project Filter feeders, double binds and other silicones (2019) at Foto Tallinn.
Outset Estonia, the largest private funding initiative supporting art in Estonia, invited an international jury to Tallinn to select works by Estonian artist from the fair, which will be gifted to international public art collections. The jury, comprising Melanie Bühler (Frans Hals Museum), Roos Gortzak (Vleeshal), and Karin Laansoo (Outset Estonia/Kai Art Center) selected the video work Fish That Swallows the Earth/ Particles That Dance in the Sunrays (2018) by Mari-Leen Kiipli and a photo by Cloe Jancis from her series Waiting for eternity (2019).
Foto Tallinn 2019 was organized by the Estonian Union of Photography Artists (Foku).
