Maret Sarapu (1978) is an Estonian glass artist based in Tallinn. She is a graduate of the Department of Glass Art at the Estonian Academy of Arts (BA 2002, MA 2005). Besides having held exhibitions in Estonia, Sarapu has also participated in group exhibitions abroad. Sarapu’s artwork has been shown in a number of public collections: Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design, Museum of American Glass (USA), Museum of Modern Glass Art (Turkey). Her works have won prizes in national art competitions and are presented in various public buildings.
Closet Ostrich (2019) consists of small glass objects and large lenticular images of the same objects. Sarapu is intrigued by beauty — both in the meaning of aesthetics and kindness. Is practising aesthetics that is free from politics, a form of escapism or self-care? Is cultivating your own garden an egoistic or deeply responsible activity? Taking care of your garden invests in your wellbeing, but others would also enjoy the beauty of it and find inspiration, seeds and refuge there. Taking care of your garden is neccessary also so that the weeds growing in your garden wouldn’t invade your neighbour’s territory.
Sarapu enjoys working with various delightful views. Observing the new world opening behind the freshly polished surfaces. What will happen when light falls and reflects on this world? What will happen if it transforms into something larger? How do a small original and its large copy relate to each other? How much does a detail tell about its whole?
